For writers at any level, this is an in-depth look at the fundamentals of writing: dramatic structure, character development, and engaging dialogue. Through a variety of writing exercises and workshops, students will develop their own scripts culminating into a sharing of work at the final class meeting. Perfect for those who have always been interested in writing, those who would like more opportunities for developing their work, and professionals who would like to exercise their creative muscles.

Meet the Instructors


Andrew Reid graduated from George Mason University School of Theater with a BA in Playwriting and Dramaturgy. Currently residing in Fairfax, Virginia, his plays have had staged readings with various theaters in the area such as The HUB, NextStop and The Kennedy Center. Andrew wrote part one of Swings and Slides, AFYP's newest professional production which premiered this June. His full length-play We Found the Wild Things was produced with Who What Where Theater Collective in 2017; Saudade was produced in 2016 as part of the Capital Fringe Festival. Aside from theater, Andrew has assisted with production on several films produced by Hand Me Down Films; The Forest of Light, Unbelievably Fearson and The Pig. Andrew works currently as a teaching artist with Acting for Young People.


Zachary Wilcox holds a BA in Theater from George Mason University with concentrations in performance, playwriting, and dramaturgy. He has been a teaching artist with AFYP since Fall 2013. Zach wrote part one of Swings and Slides, AFYP's latest professional production, and is the Logistics Coordinator for summer camp and showcase programs. As a playwright, he has been awarded the Certificate for Excellency in Playwriting and Dramaturgy from GMU in 2015 and was selected to participate in the 2016 Kennedy Center Playwriting Intensive.  Recently, his audio play, Midnight Tracks, premiere with Who What Where Theater Collective.
